Do-it-Yourself Home Automation Projects

You’ve been doing a lot of projects since you were in the elementary. There are times when you do it on your own, and sometimes you seek for your parents’ help. Now that you’re all grown-up, you can do many things alone, with no or less minimal supervision.

One project that is very popular nowadays is home automation. With home automation, you can have a more convenient place to dwell in; it’s like stepping into a whole new different world where everything happens with just a push of a button.

This may seem impossible, but because of today’s technology, almost anything is possible. If you want to experience having a high-tech home, then it’s time that you decide for home automation.

Home automation is not that complicated. There are gadgets and devices which are complicated but you can settle for do-it-yourself home automation gadgets. DIY home automation gadgets require no professional assistance; a typical example is the X10.

In any project that you wish to undertake, the first consideration is your budget. A home automation project also requires a budget, and determining it can be difficult. Other ordinary projects as making a cabinet is an easy one because you’re already familiar with it, but when you talk about home automation, it’s entirely a new one.

You should be able to identify what particular thing or things you want to be incorporated in your home automation. For this project, you want to automate your whole house. Already this huge project includes lighting controls, security devices, and controls for HVAC, and so on. But this is easier if you divide your plan into two sections, namely: automating by room, and by task.

If you start with rooms, you must again identify what to automate. You might want to automate the lights, draperies, appliances, security, and fans. You will need several module types of X10, a budget, specialized devices, and possible problems.

For some people who prefer to do it on their own, it would be better to do things by task. For instance, start by automating all lighting controls in the house. You can also start with the HVAC, appliance control, outdoor devices, outdoor lighting, and security. It will depend entirely on you, so you should start with what you think is the most important and slowly work your way to the remaining ones. This approach is easier especially the process of setting it all up.

When you talk about home automation, sky is the limit. But if you choose to start with the basic automation kit, it can cost you around $30. After deciding what things to automate, the next step is to decide on how much you’re willing to spend on it.

Once you’ve established the budget, then it’s time to look for devices and gadgets. There are many products to choose from, with different brands as well. Go for expensive ones only if it can give you useful features, otherwise you can stick to the less expensive ones. This is important especially if you have a limited budget.

If you always experiment on new things, it would be better to choose versatile components, but this mean you will have to spend more up front. Examples are using 3-prong modules with pass-through connectors if you’re short in electrical outlets; use 3-prong outlets if you have plug-in modules; and get a controller that enables programming of switches and modules if you plan to have programmable scenes in the future. This is for X10 projects only.

If you’re using X10, then you have to choose the useful and vital accessories for your home automation project. You will need a voltage sensor, straight-edge screwdrivers, head screwdrivers, and spare batteries.

You have to pick your next objective. If you’re automating your lighting controls, identify which rooms needs it such as the bedroom, the dining room, den, etc. You can create lighting scenes in each room which your family can enjoy.

Lastly, you should budget the time allotted for each automation project. If you have a job, then you will be able to do it during weekends. You can ask for help from other family members, doing things together is more worthwhile than spending many hours on your own.

After the project is finished, you can now enjoy the benefits of home automation.

Home Automation Networking through Home Electronic System

The international standard, although relatively slow, has a large participation in the trade of ideas between developers of home automation around the world. The application models specifications promotes the interoperability of the products. This is considered worthwhile then focusing on the latest protocols.

There are reports written to lead energy utility corporations to develop new consumer services which utilize networks for home automation. This led to the development of home automation networking international standard called as HES (Home Electronic System). Just recently, this material has been updated and reflects its progressive results.

The HES primary goal is to identify software and hardware so that manufacturers can offer one product version which could operate on a wide range of networks for home automation. There are several HES components needed to accomplish this objective.

-	Universal Interface. This interface module is integrated in the appliances to allow communication over different networks of home automation. The HES primary goal is to establish communication between appliances on any communication network of home automation. UI or universal interface is incorporated to the appliances including the standard data plug. The standard language application is likewise developed to all messages and commands of the appliances.

Each connection points on the network contains NAU (Network Access Unit) which convert the appliances messages and data signals to a specific communication protocol of home automation. HES identify the protocol of communications between the NAU and the IU.

-	Command Language. The language utilized by appliances to communicate with each other regardless of the network where messages are being carried. The HES language accommodates the commands of the networks. However the interposing of NAU-IU link among appliances and network mediums cannot optimize the operation of the home automation system but it reduces costs when sold in a large market.

-	HomeGate. This residential gateway links control networks at home to the external networks of service providers. The primary function of the gateway is to translate protocols among WAN (wide area network) and LAN (local area network). This contains features of a firewall limiting messages which can flow inside and outside the house.

The working group on HES is also licensed for investigating network applications on communications, control, and command in mixed-use and commercial buildings. Apartment houses having offices and retail shops belong to the mixed-use buildings category.

The subsystems and appliances designers makes the decisions concerning variables and functions which can be accessed from other gadgets within the networks of home automation. In engineering language, these are options concerning controllability and observability. There must be a consistency in these decisions so that the devices can successfully interoperate. The application model explains the device engineering aspects which can be written, executed, or read through the networks. This model is important to convey information to the product’s manufacturers which will be connected by a network for home automation purposes.

Major protocol never includes the subsystem model’s complete application within its specifications. Checking of objects which comprise an application can infer a model. The selection of methods, variables, and objects are patterned on how the communication interface designers understand the device. This information needs to be completely described in the application model. Otherwise, the manufacturers can misinterpret details on operation of the device since they don’t have staff or network experts having familiarity with the models of communications.

The countries which are considered as Principal Members have approved HES models for publications including energy management, security, and control system. The Working Group of HES examines functional safety issues. Thus the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) Advisory Committee of Safety requested the Working Group to develop guidelines on home automation network safety. The safety messages that are considered critical must be confirmed before it will be sent throughout the network. The appliances operation through the network does not compromise its safety aspects. Thus, in case of network failures, the device maintains the appropriate levels of safety.

There are safety standards provided by IEC for various devices when they operate individually. The ACOS main concern is that interaction between products via home control networks obtain the safety requirements harmonization. Functional safety is defined by the IEC as the home control system’s capability to execute actions essential for maintaining and achieving desired levels of safety within normal situations and emergency cases.

Wireless Security Systems

With crime on the rise, home security systems are a must have. With burglars becoming more and more common, you simply must protect your loved ones as well as your possessions. There are several different types of security systems available for you to choose from. For your home, there are wired and wireless security systems available. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages, along with the differences in price as well.

The driving technology found with both wired and wireless security systems are quite different. Wireless security systems don’t need to be wired through the house; they will instead send transfer messages to the control panel through radio signals. When they were first introduced, wireless security systems were proved to be unreliable when compared to the wired systems. As time went by and more and more people looked into them, wireless systems began to take form.

When compared to wired systems, wireless security systems are a lot easier and more convenient to install due to the fact of there being no wires. Wireless systems can save you a lot of money, time, and effort due to there being no ripping of the floors or walls in your home. Wireless systems on the other hand are more expensive than wired systems and you’ll need to replace their batteries on a periodic basis. The primary advantage to wireless security systems is the fact that they are easy to relocate, meaning that you can easily shift them from one home to another.

Wireless security systems use the same components as other security systems such as the touchpad, control panel, cameras, detectors, and alarms. Wireless systems rely on radio frequencies that are transmitted by the door contacts, windows, and motion activated sensors. The touch pads that are located at the entrances to the home will provide activation and deactivation of the system. In the event of the power failing, a backup system will take over the wireless system and continue to provide security for your home.

To use a wireless system, all you need to do is input the code through the control panel. Normally, this is done prior to entering and leaving your home. Once the code is input into the control panel, the control panel will send remote signals to the rest of the system that will activate the alarms. Depending on the system you have, an alarm will go off either by motion detection or a window or door being opened.

If you look around you can find several different wireless security systems, many of which you can install yourself. Before you buy a system though, you should always consult a professional who can survey your home and suggest the equipment you need. Even though it may cost a bit more money, it will be more than worth it down the road.

Vacations And Home Security

Nothing is more stressful, disappointing, or downright sickening than returning home from a hard earned vacation – only to find that your home had been robbed. Burglary is a common thing these days, with burglary around the home occurring quite frequently. When you go on a vacation, you shouldn’t have to worry about the condition of your home and your things. Your vacation should be relaxing, without having to worry about anything. If you plan ahead before you go on your vacation – you can help to minimize the risks of anything going wrong.

One way to fend off burglars is by hiring a house sitter. A house sitter is one of the best ways to get rid of any type of trouble as well. All you need to do is find someone who will swing by your house a few times a day, check on things, and turn the lights on at night. If you have animals at your house, you may want to hire a house sitter to care for your animals as well as your home. In most cases, peace of mind is worth any price. If you decide to hire a house sitter, you should always make sure that you choose someone reliable who you can trust while you are away.

In the event that you are unable to get a house sitter, you should strive to make it appear as if someone is living in your home. To be on the safe side, you can have a neighbor whom you trust keep an eye on your home. Whoever you choose to watch your property should have a number to contact you with in case something goes wrong.

You can buy various timers and such that will make it appear as if people are in your home. Radio timers and light timers can go a long way in making criminals believe someone is at your house. You’ll also want to consider your lawn before you leave as well. If the grass is too high, people will wonder if anyone is home. You should always cut it before you leave, and have someone else cut it for you if you are going to be gone for more than a week.

You’ll also want someone to pick up your mail as well. If the mail starts to pile up in your box, criminals will know that you aren’t home. Even though you may not be on vacation for long, you should always make sure that your door is locked and that you leave the spare key with someone whom you trust who can keep an eye on things for you.

When that individual comes by your home to check on things, they should be sure to turn the lights and television on in the evening. You should also make sure that your trusted person knows to check on the interior of your home, and look for anything out of the ordinary. If something is wrong, that person shouldn’t hesitate to contact the police. A broken widow, door, or furniture out of place is the first sign that something is wrong.

Vacations are something we all need to take. Vacations are supposed to be fun and relaxing, with no worries about anything else. If you take the necessary steps before you leave, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. Whether it’s a friend or family member stopping by to check on things or a house sitter that you’ve hired – peace of mind goes a long way in helping you make the most of your very important vacation.

Overview:

This tutorial covers the various ways that you can control your mobile lighting.

Power Strips: The simplest way of controlling your lights. A simple power strip that can be bought at any hardware store. Usually requires the most amount of extension cord.

Power Panels: A strip of switches that can be mounted in your rack that controls individual lights. While it’s more versatile than the Power Strip, it too usually requires many extension cords.

X10 Home Automation: Uses modules that you plug your lighting into which receives pulses through the electrical wiring of the building. It allows for remote operation saving you from using a lot of extension cords.

Dimmer/Switch Packs and Chase Controllers: Designed to automate your lighting, these fixtures have programs that will rotate your lighting. Perfect for any lights that might have duty cycles.

DMX Controllers: The most advanced and most versatile of control options. Can come in hardware control or software. They go beyond basic on/off control and allow for adjusting of how the light operates.

Theft Proofing Your Mailbox

Although most people only think about their home and property when dealing with home security, the mailbox is equally as important. On a daily basis, there is a lot of personal information that goes through your mailbox. Even though burglary is a concern, identity theft is just as big of a concern as well. Most people don’t even think about theft proofing their mailboxes, which easily explains the increase in identity theft over the years. Almost all mailboxes can be easily broken into, giving thieves instant access to personal information.

Even though there are many mailbox designs in the United States, most of them are outdated in terms of security. They may perform their duties of receiving mail quite well, although they normally don’t offer the security needed to protect people from identity theft. These days, identity theft is a common thing – simply because people don’t do a better job with protecting their mailbox.

Each and every day we all get personal information delivered to us by mail. In some cases, we get credit card offers or bills that contain our personal information. Although we don’t think anything about it, most of us head out to our mailbox, collect the mail, and then go back in our houses. All it takes is a thief to beat you to the mailbox, just a couple of minutes. Once the thief has collected a few pieces of your mail, he can easily use your personal information to charge credit cards and other bad things using your identity.

To protect yourself against identity theft you should always include your mailbox in your plans for home security. The mailbox is very important, and should always be protected. If you have a traditional mailbox now, you should get rid of it immediately. As a replacement, you should look into a safe and secure mailbox. The ideal types are those made of solid steel. The top of the box should be accessible to the mailman, allowing him to put the mail in without a problem. The bottom side of the mailbox however, should only be accessed via key. Mailboxes that require a key to get into will protect you from identity theft – as the thief simply won’t have access to your mail.

You can find secure mailboxes at a local hardware or department store, even online. There are very affordable these days and will go a long way in protecting you for identity theft. Mailboxes that are constructed from solid steel are nearly impossible to break into, yet they will open easily for you to check your mail with the lock and key system. The next time you go out to the mailbox to check your mail – you should think twice about your safety and theft proof your mailbox to protect yourself and your loved ones from identity theft.
